In addition to the New Lunenburg Schooners, Dawson Moreland owns and operates The Dory Shop, also of Lunenburg, a century-old boat building firm that specializes in the construction of Banks dories and other classic wooden watercraft.
The company is also currently engaged in the refit of a former fishing vessel being repurposed as an auxiliary sail, inter-island cargo vessel for the Cook Islands, South Pacific.
Captain Daniel Moreland of Lunenburg is president of Dawson Moreland & Associates. Growing up in the Caribbean and New England sailing small and large schooners, Dan is a Master Mariner, rigger, sailmaker and ship restorer. He is well known for the design, retrofitting and rigging of the beautiful and immensely seaworthy Barque Picton Castle of Lunenburg, a vessel he has commanded through five voyages around the world.
Dan also spent years in the restoration of famous North Atlantic fishing schooners including his award-winning restoration of the 1894 Grand Banks Fishing Schooner Ernestina, ex Effie E. Morrissey, as well as the 1893 Fishing Schooner Lettie G. Howard. In over 35 years of sailing ships and seagoing he has led a number of award-winning restorations of 19th century wooden sailing ships, rigged, outfitted and commanded various historic vessels and consults on the design and operation of such historic sailing vessels.
Celebrated schooner-man and master shipwright David Westergaard of Tusket, Nova Scotia is leading the design and construction of this exciting enterprise.
Dave has spent a lifetime in the world of wooden vessels. Growing up in a boatyard on the Atlantic coast led him first to sea and then to the rebuilds of several awe-inspiring yachts. He has built and designed several exquisite schooners and sloops in this size range and has been featured in Wooden Boat Magazine. He has also sailed extensively in many vessels throughout the Caribbean and North America.
The most significant of his many accomplishments to this project is his design and construction of the fast-as-a-witch Tancook Whaler, the Schooner Sun of a Gun and his stunning Schooner Sea Change. Dave also has a background in managing boat yards.
This talented pair of Dan and Dave have come together to make these Twins Schooners a reality on Lunenburg shores. They have put together a team of skilled Lunenburg County shipwrights, well known for their fine craftsmanship. View the gang at work here.
